Sambucus ebulus grows to a height of 1–2 m and has erect, usually unbranched stems growing in large groups from an extensive perennial underground stem rhizome. The fruit is a small upwards situated violet-black berry 2–3 mm diameter. The fruit is ripe at the end of summer around September. It is spread all over the Bulgarian country up to 1800 m above sea level.

An extremely important feature of the dwarf elder berrie is the anthocyanin content. This is one of the strongest antioxidants in nature and has no artificial substitute! Its biological action is multiplied thanks to the combination of vitamins K, E, A, C, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9 and minerals.
